Online contests have been around since the inception of the internet and have grown in stature. A complete business model on online contests was built by alok kejriwal by setting up his now famous contest2win.com. But now a days online contests are being used as a strategy move by web companies either to engage users or to build a web business.

We profile three different contests and review them..

The blogger with the highest ibQ Score will be ranked first; the blogger with the second-highest ibQ Score will be ranked second and so on down to 100. ibQ Score is calculated through a formula that combines how readers rated a blogger’s blog, a combination of page views, comments and number of fans that a blog has and the blogger’s consistency in posting new posts on the blog. So every time a blogger makes a new post it adds to his/her Score.

What is the Objective? -  The objective for ibibo is build user generated blogs and get more and more readers to comment. A web 2.0 push through a contest.

What is the reward? - The Top Blogger wins Rs 6,00,000, Bloggers ranked from 2 to 10 win Rs 3,60,000 each!, Bloggers ranked from 11-30 win Rs 1,80,000 each! and finally Bloggers ranked from51-100 win Rs 90,000 each!

What do we think? - Well being a blogger myself i can say that money isn’t the prime motivation! Having an individual voice and getting recognised for what i write i a more potent motivation for bloggers! Nonetheless this kind of prize money would attract some bloggers but i seriously doubt the quality of posts and blogs that are generated due to this contest.

www.Webrockstars.in  How does WebRockstars work?- A contest run by Microsoft to hunt for the best web developers and designers in India. This contests revolves around developers using Miscrosft products to build or design innovative stuff. There are 4 challenges -

 

Challenge 1: Use the Virtual Earth SDK to build an exciting Mashup
Challenge 2: Build a gadget for Live.com in one of the following three categories
Challenge 3: Create useful and compelling user interfaces that are unique and forward thinking using Microsoft Expression Interactive Designer.
Challenge 4: Design a website using Microsoft Expression Web Designer

What is their objective? - To engage the developer and designer community with Microsoft as a brand and to give exposure to their products like Microsoft Expression, Virtual Earth and Live.com.
What is the reward? - Top winner in each category will get to travel to Microsoft Headquarters in Redmond to attend the annual festival by Microsoft Research - TechFest 2007. The winner will receive a ticket to attend TechFest, Airfare and hotel accommodations. 1st Runners-up to the 5th Runners-up in each category will get an X-box each.
What do we think? - Well interesting move by microsoft. I guess they know that to attract innovative talent they need to be innovative themselves. And this contest is innovative and well designed as well thanks to becwebwise.

bunkd hottest college chick contest india

How does Bunkd work?- A contest run by bunkd.com (there s no information on what bunkd.com is) to find India’s Hottest College Chick! Its very simple you submit your profile with your photo’s and if you are approved you are on the contestants list. Its an online only contests so viewers votes would decide whose the hottest! So even guys can register to vote for the hot girls!

What is their objective? - Well bunkd.com the url suggests that the contest is aiming for more than just being a contest! My hunch tells me this is an innovative start to a social network bunkd.com! 

What is the reward? - Grand prize of a jewelry set worth Rs.25,000 to the India’s Hottest College Chick! Remaining four of the top five contestants win Ddamas earrings worth Rs.85,00 each!
Contestants also win Apple Ipods, Nike apparel, Dominos coupons during the contest games!
What do we think? - As we said earlier we think this is an innovative start to a social network..quite a start i must say.. As other social networks spam on orkut this innovative move by bunkd could be a classic move to build a social network after all all the guys will go where the hot girls are!) in a market dominated by orkut! Kudo’s to bunkd for originality!
