Google has team up with the Large Synoptic Survey Project, in an effort to give users an experience of navigating through space. This is similar to what they did with Google Earth.
Right now Google doesnt have any business model for the project and is just starting this as an experiment. Once the project is complete, they might find a way to earn cash fo the services through pay per click advertising. If the plans work out, the telescope will be consturcted by 2013. The Telescope is expected to scan the sky and capture 30 terra bytes of data per night. Google will be involved in finding a optimal solution for Storing such a huge data. Google is already coming up with the plans of 3 D animation for this project. The data will be stored in picture formats and will conctenated as the navigation is done.
Like Stephen Maran, spokesman for the American Astronomical Society estimates, "it probably won’t be long until Google lets you advertise your product next to the Orien constellation."
