While we wake up to a new social networking site everyday, well almost everyday, here in
India, as comprehensively documented by Rajiv in his India 2.0 series, interesting activity is happening outside of India in the social networking scene.

There’s talk of Wide Area Social Networking or WASN, Business 2.0 has an article on Linkedin which it refers to as Myspace for grown-ups. Funded by Sequoia Capital and Greylock, Linkedin claims to be profitable now and expects to hit revenues of $ 100 million by 2006. Furthermore, CEO and co-founder Reid Hoffman, who has invested in 40 other ventures including digg, facebook and Six Apart thinks Linkedin could be bigger than facebook: " It will piss those guys off for me to say it, but if we can tip successfully, we are massively more valuable than Facebook - and I mean a multibillion-dollar business.”

On a related note, Techcrunch has a post on how online job hunt still sucks and mentions a post which talks about eHarmony-izing the job market.

In India, with the grand success of the naukri.com IPO, the constant claims of leadership between the rivals and entry of new players, the online job scene is definitely hotting up. Combine that with the maddening activity in the social networking scene in India and we’re staring at an amazingly funny prospect. Funny yes, in a very different way. Imagine being flooded with job offers along with doing frandsheep requests on orkut! I hope I’m proved wrong. But is there space for a Linkedin type of service in India? Would be interesting to hear your views.

PS. Thanks Ashwin for the WASN link.
