Cleartrip.com which is funded by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sherpalo Ventures (which has also invested in Google) is lookimng to get aggressive in the online travel space by offering international air ticketing, foreign hotel bookings and tour packages in the domestic market from calender 2007.
Cleartrip also plans to tie up with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to offer online railway ticketing facility through IRCTC’s network.
This will coincide with service offerings for foreign travellers who wish to purchase Indian flight tickets and hotel bookings. Currently, such services are only available for domestic users and NRIs.
Stuart Crighton director (business development) and one of the founders of Cleartrip was addressing a press meet on Wednesday when he said “We have business relationships with partners, by virtue of which, we will offer a spate of new services, including international air ticketing, foreign hotel bookings and overseas travel packages. We expect to start by March-April 2007,”
The company also plans to start a TV campaign by December and target the internet savvy customers through blogs and a mobile delivery mechanism.
Besides the above Cleartrip plans to target the eastern part of India in a special way. “A print campaign is also being planned exclusively for the eastern India market jointly with an airline. The print media blitzkreig will be launched in two weeks,” Mr Crighton added
Cleartrip is ambitious in its plans for 2007 and is targetting a whopping 400000 transactions by the end of 2007! Currently cleartrip claims around 500 transactions on its website daily.
But cleartrip certainly ahs the numbers on its side as 60% of all e-commerce transactions in India are travel-related and has been estimated to account for nearly 10% of the domestic travel business by 2008.
