Hotmail goes 1 GB (Finally!)
Email It!
Microsoft Corp has announced a global storage upgrade for MSN Hotmail’s 260 million plus active email accounts expanding the storage capacity to 1 gigabyte and extending the expiration period for inactive accounts from 30 days to 60 days for those accounts that are more than two years old.
Well finally the software giant has got up from its sleep and realised that 250 Mb (its earlier offering) seems paltry infront of gmail’s 2.7 gb (and still counting!). And Gmail is not the only one.. Yahoo, Rediff and even Indiatimes had more space than hotmail!
Speaking on the upgrade, Krishna Prasad, head of Programming, MSN India & Windows Live said, “MSN continues to invest in the needs of its users, this upgrade is part of our commitment to deliver a rich email experience to our users. We believe that the added storage space and extended expiration period will be welcomed by our loyal Hotmail users.”
Well i am not too sure how many loyal hotmail users are around? I think most people use hotmail primarily for the messenger service here in India. Even after the beta testing of Windows Live Mail, the next generation of web mail from Microsoft i did not feel that MSN India had a winner on hands. Though Windows Live Mail will feature 2 gigabytes of storage space, 120 days expiration period, anti-phising features, address autocomplete, and drag-and-drop functionality making it easier to read, send, and organize email messages. But the interface for and Indian internet connection was too slow and would hang constantly! Maybe the beta version had to be considered just that beta (use at your own risk!).
Here’s hoping though that this increase in gigabytes puts hotmail on the right path before it gets too late to retain loyal customers.
