In my last article i had explained what phishing was and how a fake UTI Bank page was online inorder to extract account username and password from innocent users and then rob their bank accounts. Now here is reason why Indians should be cautious about their financial transactions online.

According to a survey by Phishtank a community that tracks phishing activity on the net India accounts for over 8% of the phishing sites for October 2006! See the graphic below..

As Phishtank is an International community with more number of users coming from the US also combined with the fact that many Indian users would not even know what phishing is the 8% statistic in reality might be much more!

The statistics on above graphic are for October 1, 2006 through October 31, 2006.

The total number of suspected phishes submitted by the PhishTank community were 7,061. Also the top target that was identified as the most used for phishing was Paypal.com.

Cases for phishing would be rarely reported in India because the general trend is that even if you identify that a certain email or site is a phishing site you are asked to ignore it. I see this as a major bane of internet in the years to come.. Identity theft, Phishing and other such activities could damage the experience of a user on the web thereby driving users away..

  1. I am sure you already know this but just in case – these phishing stats are only based on websites submitted to the phishtank database – so they may or may not reflect the overall trend.
