.IN domains cross 2 lakhs!

DNA: Well it seems internet seems to be catching on it India or atleast as far as domain registrations are concerned as the India-specific .in Internet address has touched the 200,000 registration mark, firmly establishing it as a leading country code domain globally with most of the users (around 63%) in India followed by users from US and Germany.

The domain initially started with 6,500 registrations before it was re-launched in January last year by Department of Information Technology (DIT) and National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI).

Though Indian registrations were 63% the rest 37% were from more than 150 countries. The most popular countries as mentioned above are India, US, and Germany, which together account for over 81 percent of registrations, followed by the Britain, The Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Switzerland and Italy.

So is this a moment to rejoice and claim that India has arrived on the internet scene? Well not yet.. though 2 lakh domains might have been registered but many of them might be old websites booking their domains for example try logging on to www.naukri.in or www.rediff.in and there must be many others like these.. So 2 lakhs though a great achievement in a short span of time doesn’t really reflect the true picture.
