Google to test print ads in U.S. newspaper

Sir martin sorell of WPP in a interview with new sun some time back "We’re Google’s third-biggest customer. They want us to buy more. At the same time, they are threatening to compete with us by setting up electronic platforms to buy and sell media," But why is sorell worried about Google rather than other advertising agencies??

Sir Martin sorell has every reason to worry because Google is looking to expand into traditional media, including TV, print and radio. After making inroads into radio advertising through acquiring dMarc, which offers insertion of ads into radio airplay through an online interface,Google is set to begin helping customers buy advertisements in 50 U.S. newspapers in a test of how the Web search leader can extend its business into offline media.

Google said it has invited more than 100 advertisers already buying ads through its Web marketing system to join a three-month test of a Print Ads service that places ads in daily papers reports Reuters. Google is giving greater control over how ad sales are made. Advertisers log into the Google.AdWords system and select newspapers and available ad space, then upload the advertising artwork. But newspaper publishers retain creative and financial control over whether to approve or reject bids.

Google isn’t taking a commission on the ad sales during the test but plans to eventually Google is developing a system that lets your computer "listen" to your television to create targeted web adverts has been designed and tested by researchers at Google. The "mass personalization" system can identify a programme from as little as five seconds of sound. It then presents related information or adverts in the web browser. Although the product has been tested and shown to work in trials, Google are keen to stress that there are still technical hurdles to overcome and that it may never be launched.
