.mobiMost phones are in the developing world although the biggest market would be China, which has nearly half a billion but the number of mobile phone subscribers in India is increasing by over 5 million each month. Also the TDG report predicts India’s mobile user base to cross 350 million by 2010. Now keeping this exponential growth in mind lets analyse the recently introduced .mobi domains whose sole purpose was to provide mobile friendly websites. Though initially the charges to book a .mobi domain name was around $100 but now it has dropped to around $20. Also a whopping 175,000 .mobi domains have been purchased since the initial launch in May this year. The initial rush to buy .mobi domain could be attributed to the fear that others may encroach on the domains but in the long run it seems having a .mobi domain and keeping a mobile optimized version of the site on such a domain may prove to be a winning move.

This is because mobile phones are nothing but small computers whose new uses could transform the developing world and the way it accesses uses and communicates using the internet.

DotMobi has also come up with a Switch On guide for designers to create sites that will run on .mobi domain. So it seems .mobi is all set to take off and become an important extension for users and why not after all there are more mobile users in India than net users and statistics show that its probably going to stay that way. Though the number of high end mobile users and futher of high end mobile users having GPRS might be lesser but still it does not in anyway overshadow the importance and future of mobile access to the internet. So the question here is are we looking at a possible future where .mobi could get more powerful than .com?
