BSNL plans Online gaming, IPTV


After exhausting over 90% of its capacity of one million broadband lines BSNL now plans to increase their average revenue per user and planning to introduce value added services reports Economic times.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) will soon offer online gaming to its broadband subscribers from next month to increase revenues from broadband services,also planning to offer internet protocol television (IPTV) services to its subscribers. It is already working a trial run in Pune.

Online gaming market in India is at $30 million, of which mobile gaming and internet-based gaming contribute $8 million each in revenues. It is being expected that by the year 2010-11 the software gaming industry will be $700 million in size and console, mobile and broadband or internet-based gaming will each be one-third of the pie.

UPDATED BY RAJIV: Its only natural that it leverages its broadband connectivity to offer value added services that increase revenue. Also this move by BSNL makes makes the online gaming very very competitive. As you have players like Reliance with with recently launched Zapak.com, Sify with A3india.com, MIH india with chotafish.in and motafish.in, Levelupgames India and the old war horse Indiagames.com. Talk about a competitive war between in the online gaming sector!
