Rediff.com in online gaming?

We hear news of Rediff.com entering into online gaming business and that too by this quarter itself!!!.

rediff gamingexchange4media quotes Ajit Balakrishnan, Founder CEO of Rediff.com "We are building our gaming division internally", negating the possibilities of acquisition all together. Going by the Pearl Research report online games market in India is valued at $4 million currently and is forecasted to exceed $200 million in 2010.

However, rediff is certainly not the first – mover in the online gaming space. In May, 2006 indiatimes and Level up! networks announced a strategic tie-up to to present Ragnarok, one of India’s most popular massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG). This was followed by news of Reliance Entertainment planning an investment of over $100 million in online gaming business over the next three years. While Sify had launched A3 in Jan 2006, a 3D MMOG licensed from Korean publisher Actozsoft.

Another major indian online player worth mentioning here would be indiagames, though recently there were news of the company running into trouble as China based wireless company Tom Online also the majority owner of indiagames was looking at exiting the gaming company.

All said and done, rediff’s entry into the gaming scene would be worth a watch only if they have some interesting and unique gaming content to offer to indian gamers. Also i see a hope here because of the CEO’s determination to build " a gaming division internally" and not aquisition, but if this division plans to offer the same old arcade, puzzle, word games that are available on every gaming site and not develop or aquire unique content, i hardly see a reason for India gamers to be excited for!!!
