google launches another search engine

Google came up with another search engine searchmash.

searchmash.com is different from Google in terms of

  • entering search terms without having to put your cursor in the search box.
  • reorder search results by dragging and dropping them. Just click on the number next to the result.
  • click on the URL under search results for options that allow you to refine your query.
  • Images related to a search appear in a column to the right of the results
  • When you click on more results you wont see them in a new page

These are only current applications and few more are expected . I tried searching with few keywords and the results in Google are different from searchmash (in most cases the order in which they displayed)
With SearchMash, Google "plans to test user interface ideas without Google’s brand somehow skewing the tests," Danny Sullivan, editor of Search Engine Watch.com wrote in a blog posting

UPDATED BY RAJIV - The only way one comes to know that search mash is a google product is by clicking on the privacy policy on their homepage. There is no mention of searchmash even on the google labs page. Now the question is why would the world’s most popular search engine test another search engine with a separate brand name and keep it a secret? though the reason to test a user interface without google’s brand name skewing the results seem potent but sometimes google and its ways are a mystery that keep analysts and competitors confused. This second search engine from the search giant would surely keep the other major search guys Yahoo and MSN on its toes.

If they (Google), didn't want people to know, they would have registered under a different compnay name. But the very fact that they have it in their privacy policy shows that they intend it to market it by "Look there …. they are trying to hide something ………"
