Police departments in Karnataka, Los angels, China and Warwick came up with the idea of using blogs to inform about crime news and communicating with people.  Dakshin Kannada Police maintains a blog, with the purpose of disseminating information about crime news in the district to the public. Though most of us won’t be interested in knowing it is a novel attempt of using technology to dismantle information to public and press. I t also helped in police to reduce the earlier cumbersome process of issuing press releases (drafting it, taking a print out and assigning one cop to drop it in press offices is now eliminated) Blogging by police departments aims in building public trust by improving communication. It also helps in police hear what public is saying, get feedback on there work. The success of such initiatives depends on the role of top guys and their commitment. Blogging implies having a conversation with the public. It was this kind of demand that inspired the Los Angeles Fire Department to start its own blog two years ago – and Web surfers have widely praised the results Can the same initiative be done in all government departments?

Yes certainly if there is a change in mind set of policy makers and our bureaucrats.
