Blog camp in Chennai - WATblog’s exclusive review
Like all good things blogcamp also came to an end!!!
Though there wasn’t anything earth – shattering said, but the ‘unconference’ was even worth visiting because it got most Indian bloggers under one roof!!
Where else would you find a cricket, a software engineer, journalists, photographers or even IT geeks come together and discuss something in common. Even as an unfamiliar person to most of them I could easily correlate to what they talked about and thought about internet and the way blogging is much more than just a term today.
Somehow one is so used to a sense of formality that characterize conferences, that it actually took me sometime to get used to speakers talking about there experiences in blogging without a prepared – rehearsed monologue.
Highlights
Atul Chitnis on Blogging in the ’90s: A Dinosaur’s Tale
I like the fact the his blogging on a lack of a dominos pizza outlet near his house actually made Dominos to open one, however, a point of disagreement that I felt in his entire seesion was the fact that he preferred ‘email’(one to one conversation) more than having ‘comments’ on his blog. To this, someone in the audience rightly pointed that comments enable a public discussion,I completely agree to this and more often than not like to keep my post open ended, so comments and people’s reaction can take it forward.
Veer traces the history of Indian blogging

A slide from Veer’s presentation on the topic ‘360 degree view of the Indian Blogosphere’, another notable point in his presentation was his view that personal blogs are by far the biggest category in india - 80% people are blogging their opinion as opposed to theme blogging. He also announced the launch of the new version of Blogstreet.
The one-eyed girl from Chennai

This is probably the first thing that comes to my mind after thinking of blogcamp – Scott Carney talked about the one-eyed girl that appeared in a story of wired. Quoting it as an example he raised various questions during the discussion on why is it that we limit our blogs only to opinions, why can’t we extend them to create awareness
The 1.25 million user’s blog - and the person behind it

Here we have, our very own answer to those asking the same old question “this all looks good, but how do you monetize?”
Amit Agrawal’s blog ‘digital inspiration’ not only get that huge a traffic but also caters to 40 European countries!! His blog was also covered by CNN – IBN, and here’s the video:
Ok!!! And here are the tips that he had to offer to others for making money through their blogs:
• “Your blog needs to be well placed well in search engines” – (he gets 80% of his traffic from search engines)
• The title needs to be as enticing as possible
• You could use your blog as your portfolio and get related consulting jobs
• Of course Adsense!!
Photo Blogging by digital photographer – Sharad Haksar

This pic got him into some controversy with coke, where he was asked to remove the picture from his site.
Blogging for a global audience

For some reason I missed this session, and reading about this elsewhere, makes me regret that
, however, we wouldn’t like our readers feel left out
and here’s an interesting post by one the bloggers I met at the blogcamp - Rajat Gupta on his blog
To sum it up I would say it was an amazing experience – meeting the people behind those thoughts you always associated, agreed or disagreed with!!!
The best part of the conference seemed to be the fact that it encouraged a lot of dialogue, though I wish it was a little more organized (I missed some sessions on music blogging and podcasting as I wasn’t aware of their happening elsewhere). But I guess asking for a structured and organized conference of bloggers would be sacrilege.
