This might not be a news or a surprise, but still worth giving a watch. Just after reading an article by Rajiv on "Google Adwords will now reach mobile subscribers", this one stuff (which I read about a year ago) hit me to post another article on Voice Recognition Services  which has been patented (http://battellemedia.com/archives/002488.php) by Google already. As Eric (CEO of Google) pointed out in early this year,

"We do discriminate only to the degree that if you can’t use a computer or don’t have access to one, you can’t use Google, but other than that if you can type you can use Google…there will be no discrimination in accessing knowledge….Let’s imagine a group with a Google iPod one day and you tell it to search by voice - that would take care of the people who can’t use a computer - and then [Google access] just becomes about the rate at which we can get cheap devices into people’s hands."

Though the word Ipod has been patented, Google can come up with some word like Google Soundz…

A VRU based Search Engine is best described as (Got the best definition from www.arstechnica.com):
"A system provides search results from a voice search query. The system receives a voice search query from a user, derives one or more recognition hypotheses, each being associated with a weight, from the voice search query, and constructs a weighted boolean query using the recognition hypotheses. The system then provides the weighted boolean query to a search system and provides the results of the search system to a user."

The market for this service is ofcourse huge. Atleast in developing nations. Take the example of Indian Market. India has more mobile users than Computer Users. So providing Service on Mobile Phone is ofcourse gonna be a boon to both the user and for Google’s Pay Per Click (Call) advertising. Google can be accessed from anywhere through a Phone, whether it is Mumbai or Malegaon.

But the degree of relevance of search results, is still to be watched. Even todays advanced Speech Recongnition system has high word error rates for large vocabulary sizes. The repetition in queries will be different (The sound of an American is definitely gonna be different of that of a Chinese). Whether Larry is going to go forward with Voice Wighted approach is a question. On the other hand talking to a Search Engine is  definitely gonna be interesting.

Can it handle the Hinglish (Hindi + English) slangs???  Like ‘Kya re’ might give the search results on Jim Carrey :P!!!!  Eric, we are waiting for the Beta Version!!!!
