Dotcoms and Venture Funding – Two of a kind

Financial Express: Venture Funding more often than not are the two most important words for an internet entrepreneur or for any entrepreneur in a capitalist economy. Dotcoms saw the crash of 2001 but a recent article states that the confidence in Dotcoms is back and if you dont believe me then this fact will surely make you think. In the first six months of this year, online and mobile services firms attracted 33% of the total VC deals, the highest in any one space. The trend started in 2005 with $9.5 million invested across four deals (not including the $90 million investment by Infinity Ventures in Sify), growing to a much larger $44 million across 15 deals in the first six months of 2006.

here is a list of the venture funding deals off late in the dotcom space;

Bill desk ($5 million) – Clearstone Ventures
24×7 Learning ($10 million) – KITVEN & 2 Private investors
Yatra Online ($5 million) – Reliance Capital, Norwest VC, TV18
Cleartrip.com ($3 million) – KPCB, Sherpalo
Travelguru ($10 million) – WestBridge Capital
Naukri.com ($10 million) – KPCB, Sherpalo
Shaadi ($8 million) – WestBridge
Jobstreet ($2 million) – TV18
Times Internet ($7 million) – WestBridge
Makemytrip ($10 million) – SAIF Capital Partners
BharatMatrimony ($8 million) – Yahoo and Canaan Partners

Though the list seems impressive one important point to note is that there is very little seed funding happening in India even if there is it is limited to some established names getting into different businesses. I think internet in India would really be considered booming once start ups by unknownn people are funded and become successful. Though idealistic its important for the internet industries growth as well. The list isn’t comprehensive there have been many angel funding occurences as well. if you think i have missed out on some please comment and let me know..

  1. Ive written this over many blogs and write it again. Venture funding coming in India is late stage funding. What we need is bootstrap funding. If we need to be somewhere even closer to Siicon Valley in CA we need bootstrap funding.

  2. @ Harshal: I agree to your point. But nonetheless, I think the line up given by Rajiv for venture funding is impressive, its atleast a good start and hopefully things will move to the other end pretty soon.

  3. May I have a list of other VC deals happened recently, specifically in Social Networking websites??
