Indians are getting ahead at going online!

People in India are taking onto web in a big way faster than anyone else across the globe - including US, China, Japan and Germany in terms of the online population growth. According to the latest survey by comScore Networks The total online population in India, measured in terms of people aged over 15 years accessing internet, rose 7.8 per cent to 18.02 million in June, from 16.71 million three months ago in March while the overall world online population growth rose 2.7% and china’s online population grew by 5.22% during the same period.
India has also become the ninth biggest country in terms of the total online population from its 10th position three months ago by going above italy. The very interesting point to note here is that the statistics ignore the access through public computers. Now consider this Sify alone has over 3000 cybercafe’s across the country add another 500 from reliance and add another 1500 individual cybercafe’s (thats the most conservative guess). So we are talking about 5000 cyber cafe’s!! Considering that each cafe has average of 3 computer’s (again we are at our conservative best!) that makes it 15000 computers. Thats 15000 public computers!!! which can be access by anyone ready to pay Rs.10 or Rs.20 per hour!
What the statistics also dont count is the net access through PDA’s or mobile phones! India has 108 million mobile users and even if we consider 5% have access to internet available on their mobile phones thats makes it 5 million probable users! The total number of people accessing Internet could be much higher if those aged below 15 years and the public computer data and new-age mediums such as mobiles and PDAs are also taken into consideration.
Now i think the IAMAI report that pegs Internet users at 38.5 million could be much closer to reality.. what do u say?
