Carpooling gets competitive!

koolpoolCarpooling seems to be in.. and Now we have a website which is dedicated completely to nothing else but carpooling. Koolpool.co.in which is currently inviting 25000 registrations who would be given a free trial for 3 months. This free trial includes 10,000 free rides on a 1st come 1st use basis. This trial has been sponsored by Indiatimes 8888, Hindustan Petroleum and Radio City. Koolpool is an SMS-based carpool service which is being tested in Mumbai. The service is to be formally launched in the first week of September 2006. Initially, it will be open only to corporate executives. According to Alootechie, Mumbai Environmental Social Network, which is managing the Koolpool service, says there are about 1.5 million empty travel seats in Mumbai where over 70 per cent of cars have only one passenger. Now thats a huge number! Earlier we had an article on the carpooling survey done by the first carpooling initiative by Indimoto. My thoughts on this concept is very positive because coming from Mumbai i feel that the city very much needs this kind of a service. I am not too sure though that this concept would work beyond metros.. What’s your take?
