Internet is a double edged sword.. one which could be used to make laws more effective and one which could be used to break the laws! The first edge is how the internet can help the law? Well according to an indiatimes article Online Dispute Settlement (ODR) could soon be a reality. Now firstly what is ODR and why is it needed? Firstly India judicial system is well know for its inability to close court cases in a reasonable time (Most court cases even the important one take years to be solved!). The number of pending cases in Indian courts is three crore. Every year, 1.6 crore new cases are registered of which 1.4 crore cases are solved! Now how would ODR help?

ADVANTAGE OF ODR - Quick and fast due to information availibility on the net, parties log in along with an arbitrator or mediator, the warring parties are not physically present so it helps create a conducive atmosphere.

So it seems that the internet after all will aid the law by providing justice quicker but who will protect the internet? The second edge is the dangerous one its the internet outlaws. A man has cheated Ebay India for Rs.12 lakhs! One Mr.Amit Kumar Chauhan from lucknow was arrested for defrauding EBay India. He did this by listing several products on eBay and then accepting payments through different bank accounts from users and then not delivering the products. In such a case eBay pays to the customer who has made the payment and not recieved the goods. Amit says he had also reportedly been a victim of the same kind of fraud. Amit told that he had invested Rs 6,500 for buying a mobile phone through the website, but never received it despite depositing money. This gave him the idea of doing the same with other buyers! More on this story can be read here

So Internet is indeed a double edged sword.. Laws and Outlaws both exist here!
