High end Mobile phones might be the fastest selling item on ebay India but Indian’s are far behind when it comes using the hi-tech services that such a mobile phone can offer. According to a study by global research firm Forrester out of the 56 per cent mobile users in the country, who possess a web-enabled mobile phone, only one per cent actually browse the Internet on it.

"Urban Indian consumers have been ranked high on wireless data service adoption, but only one per cent use the mobile for surfing the Internet," Forrester said.

Though the report also mentioned that the use of mobile internet is low across the world.

Japan has been ranked first, both in terms of mobile Internet usage as well as possession of web-enabled phones.

76 per cent people in Japan have GPRS enabled phone and about 40 per cent Japanese use the services.

Over 90 per cent consumers in Asia own atleast one mobile device, with South Korea having the highest penetration rate at 99 per cent.

Urban India show a relatively higher penetration rate in web-enabled handsets, with 56 per cent of consumers having mobile data access, Forrester said, adding this was in sharp contrast to the extremely low broadband adoption rates.

However, like some other countries, high penetration rate do not translate into usage of Internet-related features in India.

The low percentage of mobile web usage in number of countries clearly point towards the fact that consumers in these countries engage in text messaging only and have not yet adopted mobile web browsing, the report said.

Now the quetion that is coming to my mind is how relevant was the launch of the .mobi domain names?? read related article
